3D printing turns a digital file into a real, solid plastic part — one thin layer at a time. At Dan3DStudio we run two of the most popular technologies side by side: FDM (fused deposition modeling) and resin (SLA / MSLA). If you've never ordered a 3D print before, this page is written for you: we'll explain what each process does best, what it costs to think about, and how to send us a file that actually works.

FDM is the workhorse. A spool of thermoplastic filament is melted and squeezed through a nozzle that traces your part layer by layer. It's tough, cost-effective, and comes in dozens of engineering materials. If you need a bracket, a housing, a jig, a mount, a replacement knob, a drone frame, or anything else that has to survive real-world use, FDM is almost always the right call.

Resin printing is the detail specialist. A vat of liquid photopolymer is cured with UV light, one paper-thin layer at a time. The result is smooth surfaces, crisp edges, and features so fine your eye can't see the layer lines. Miniatures, jewelry masters, dental models, cosmetic prototypes, and figurines all live in resin territory.

When to choose FDM vs. resin

Ask yourself two questions. First: does this part need to be strong and take a beating, or does it need to look beautiful? Second: how big is it? Anything larger than about 15 cm on a side, or anything that will be bolted, screwed, or dropped, usually belongs in FDM. Small, detailed, decorative or optical parts belong in resin.

FDM parts can be printed in PLA (easy, biodegradable), PETG (tough and weather-resistant), ABS or ASA (heat and UV resistant), and reinforced blends like ABS-CF, PA12-CF, and ASA-CF, which mix chopped carbon fiber into the plastic for stiffness comparable to some metals at a fraction of the weight. We tune infill, wall count, and layer height to match the load your part will actually see.

Resin parts come out of the printer wet and need to be washed and UV-cured before use. We handle every post-processing step in-house so what you receive is a finished piece — supports removed, alcohol-washed, cured, and inspected. Standard resins are rigid; tough resins bend before they snap; castable resins burn out cleanly for jewelry and dental casting.

How the process works, from file to finished part

Step one: send us a file. STL, STEP, OBJ, 3MF, or even a native SolidWorks or Fusion 360 file all work. No file? Send photos with a ruler in the frame, or a hand sketch with the important dimensions — our CAD team can build the model for you.

Step two: engineering review. We open your file, check wall thickness, look for features that will fail on the printer, confirm the orientation that gives you the best surface finish and strength, and quote materials and turnaround. If something looks risky we flag it before we hit print, not after.

Step three: production. We slice, print, and post-process. FDM parts are trimmed of any support material; resin parts are washed, cured, and cleaned. Tolerances are ±0.05 mm for FDM and ±0.02 mm for resin under typical conditions.

Step four: quality check and shipping. Every part is inspected against your file. Local Dallas–Fort Worth customers can pick up; national customers get shipped, often within a day or two of the order.

What it costs and how to get a fair quote

Print pricing is driven by three things: material used, machine time, and post-processing. A small clip might be a few dollars; a complex fixture that runs the printer overnight is more. Because we quote from your actual file rather than an online calculator, you get a real number based on how the part actually prints — not a worst-case guess.

If you're on a tight budget, tell us. We can often re-orient, hollow out, or change infill to bring cost down without losing what matters. Prototyping a product? We'll suggest cheaper materials for the first few iterations and switch to the final material only when the design is locked in.

What file format should I send?+

STL and STEP are ideal. We also accept OBJ, 3MF, IGES, and native SolidWorks and Fusion 360 files. If you only have photos or a sketch, we can build the CAD model for you as part of the quote.

How strong are 3D-printed parts?+

Very strong when specified correctly. Carbon-fiber-reinforced FDM parts can rival cast aluminum in stiffness. We tune infill and wall count to the actual load your part will see, and we're happy to advise on material selection.

How fast can I get my part?+
